Chapter Ten
Kiera studied Mason, wringing her hands together, and praying they could talk through whatever obstacle stood between them.
Mason straightened his shoulders and clenched his hands at his sides. She could feel the tension rising between them again. He was going to tell her, and she feared it would not be good.
âYesterday,â he began, then shook his head. âI canât believe it was only yesterday. So much has changed.â
She let him stew. What had changed? Theyâd grown closer. That was a positive thing. Whatever he was about to tell her, though, would not be positive. She was sure of it.
âWhen General August called me into his office and assigned me to guard you for your ski weekend â¦â
She nodded. Was this the time to tell him sheâd schemed that up?
âI had no idea ⦠that you were ⦠that you are now â¦.â He gestured up and down her body.
âPardon me?â
âIâve always thought you were adorable. The Fearless Little Princess. My scheming, funny little friend. I had no idea youâd grown up since I saw you last.â
âOh. All right then. So I blindsided you with my beauty and maturity?â
âThat is such an understatement.â His gaze softened as he looked her over. âI felt like Iâd been walking on a dimly lit trail my entire life and suddenly the sun washed over me and everything was light and warmth. Youâre the sun, Kiera.â
âMace â¦â She was blindsided by the sweetness and depth of his feelings. She almost rushed to him, but he held up a hand as if he knew what she was thinking. What was that about?
âI was so overwhelmed by you. I was certain everyone would see straight through me,â he continued.
She smiled at that and bit at the side of her bottom lip.
âPlease donât do that,â he groaned.
âWhat?â
âBite your lip.â He folded his arms across his chest, his posture tight. âItâs hard enough to stay in control when youâre in the same room.â
âYou do like me,â she said, glowing with happiness as everything heâd said sunk in fully. Youâre the sun, Kiera. Heâd said that, and he couldnât take it back.
âLike you?â His voice was incredulous. âKiera ⦠I â¦â He stared at her, and she thought heâd storm to her and sweep her off her feet, admit that he loved her.
Instead, he shook his head and said morosely, âIf I wouldâve had the slightest clue that you were all grown up now, and everything Iâd always thought was incredible about youâyour humor, great attitude, fearlessness, resilience, and sense of adventureâwould percolate into the most perfect woman in the world for me â¦â
He paused again, and her heart raced. The most perfect woman in the world for him? That was delightful, especially from his enticing mouth.
âI never wouldâve made that promise.â
Her neck tingled a warning. âWhat promise?â
Several beats passed, tortured beats where their gazes were locked and all the longing she felt for him was reflected in his blue eyes.
âI promised the general I would never pursue you.â
